Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a serious medical condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the arteries in the lungs, blocking blood flow. PE can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Symptoms of PE can include chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, rapid heart rate, and sweating. Risk factors for PE include blood clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis or DVT), recent surgery, prolonged immobilization, cancer, and certain medical conditions. Treatment for PE typically involves blood thinners to dissolve the clot and prevent new clots from forming. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the clot.
